There is Hope for Treating Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a localized, patchy type of hair loss, that doesn’t leave scars, characterized by the presence of one or more round or oval hairless patches. The affected skin appears normal and smooth, unlike the fungal infections, where there is crusting of the skin and uneven breaking of hairs. On the periphery of the patches, a few short hairs, which taper and loss pigment as they approach the skin, may be seen. These are called “exclamation mark” hairs due to their resemblance to the mark.

The true alopecia areata causes are still unknown, though evidence suggests that it is caused by an abnormality within the immune system which causes a misdirected auto-immune response to occur. What this means is that the body’s own immune system becomes self-destructive and consequently begins to attack certain tissues of the body.

In this case, the hair follicles come under attack, thus causing the disruption of the normal hair formation and hair loss occurs. Scientific biopsies of samples of affected scalp tissue show the presence of white blood cells in the hair follicles. Depending on the location and the severity of the attack, there are different types of alopecia areata:
Diffuse Alopecia Areata- The hair is lost all over the scalp.

Alopecia Areata Barbae- Hais loss is confined to the beard.

Alopecia Areata Universalis- This is the case where hair is lost all over the body including the scalp, eye brows, eye lashes, nose hairs, etc.

The mild form of the disease is easier to treat and the most common form of treatment is to have monthly cortisone injections, injected directly into the bare scalp. These are usually quite painless giving a slight tingling sensation and have very few side effects such as minor skin depressions. This alopecia areata treatment is usually complimented with higher strength 5% topical minoxidil solution applied twice daily. Cortisone cream is sometimes used in combination with minoxidil for improved response and applied 30 minutes after the minoxidil application.

Living with hair loss can be hard, especially in a culture that views hair as a sign of youth and good health. Even so, most people with alopecia areata are well-adjusted, contented people living full lives. Many people learning to cope find it helpful to talk with other people who are dealing with the same problems, as sometimes people with alopecia may find it difficult to meet or date others due to social phobia. Any choice for treatment options depends on the person’s age and the extent of their alopecia activity. Natural supplements, herbs, scalp preparations, laser light therapies can help in this situation, and give one hope of having a healthy scalp and full head of hair again.
